relationships with omnis

This topic, vegan dating, can be as heated as religion and politics! Many raw foodists and vegans refuse to date meat eaters for various reasons...but the bottom line is that it's a personal choice, and whether or not your partner respects your lifestyle choice. There need not be any converting to the other side!

Some helpful things to consider when embarking on a new relationship with an omni include:

1. EDUCATE. Cover the bases on why you've embrased this lifesyle from the health benefits to animal compassion. When you convey with passion and excitement your reasons for being a raw foodist, you are letting your partner know that this lifestyle is important to you,...a part of who you are!

2. REASSURE. There needs to be a mutual respect between you and your partner that you respect their choices, and that you won't make it your primary objective for this relationship to covert them to a vegetarian or raw diet.

3. EXPLORE. Explore raw cuisine together. Enjoy shopping for raw ingredients, take a raw cooking class together, research raw recipes together, or take your significant other to a raw food restaurant. De-bunk the myths that we live off of just carrots....this lifestyle is enjoyable, exciting, and delicious.

So, there you have it,...YES IT CAN BE DONE!!! A raw foodist can have a happy, healthy, lifestyle-comprimise-free relationship with an omni (meat-eater). I'm in one, and it's great! Let's just put it this way, he's made me several raw recipes (including a raw apple pie!)!!!!

Seeds...not just for the birds!!!

Seeds are very important to the raw vegan diet! They vital source of nutrition - they are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and many are an excellent source of protein. I don't know of any raw vegan that doesn't use seeds in their diet. They are great as salad toppers, in shakes/smoothies, or in any raw pasta!

Chia Seeds, Salvia hispanica: is a seed cultivated in Latin America and was culitaved by the Aztecs, and was used in drinks and as a food source. This seed is high in omega-3 fatty acids, a rich source of antioxidants and a variety of amino acids.

I enjoy chia seeds in shakes, and on top of salads. I purchase my chia seeds from Raw Food Planet: http://www.rawfoodplanet.com/raw
country/Canada.html
anada.html

Pumpkin Seeds (aka pepitas): Raw pumpkin seeds are packed full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. A 1/4 cup serving gives you almost half the recommended daily amounts of manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper, vitamin K, and zinc. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of protein and monounsaturated fats.

Not only are pumpkin seeds nutritional powerhouses, but they pack some pretty impressive health benefits as well. Some of the health benefits associated with pumpkin seeds include bone health, anti-inflammatory properties, lower cholesterol levels, relief of prostate, bladder and kidney problems, help with depression and learning disabilities, and elimination of parasites from the body.

Sunflower Seeds: Aside from being naturally rich in folate and antioxidant Vitamin E, sunflower seeds are also packed with mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. These delicious seeds that offer great texture to any salad, or eaten on their own also are high in selenium and copper, which, together with Vit. E, prevents cellular damage that may lead to cancer, heart disease, and other health problems.

Interestingly, studies also indicate that sunflower seeds are also high in many phytochemicals– such as choline, lignan, phenolic acids, and betaine, as well as the amino acid arginine — which have a wide array of health benefits.

Sesame Seeds: Sesame seeds a very good source of manganese and copper! They are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc and dietary fiber.

In addition to these important nutrients, sesame seeds contain two unique substances: sesamin and sesamolin. Both of these substances belong to a group of special beneficial fibers called lignans, and have been shown to have a cholesterol-lowering effect in humans, and to prevent high blood pressure and increase vitamin E supplies in animals. Sesamin has also been found to protect the liver from oxidative damage.

In addition, sesame seeds are 25% protein. They are especially rich in methionine and tryptophan, often lacking in adequate quantities in many plant proteins.

Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds are a great source of protein - more than fish, beef, eggs, chicken or tofu.Although not quite as much protein as whole soy, hemp protein contains all 20 known amino acids including the 9 essential amino acids (EAAs) our bodies cannot produce.

Some health benefits attributed to eating raw hemp seeds include:

  • help improve the immune system
  • lower blood pressure and blood LDL cholesterol levels (the “bad” cholesterols)
  • improve cardiovascular circulation and function
  • improve organ function
  • increase energy levels and metabolic rate
  • reduce the symptoms of PMS and menstrual cramps
  • reduce inflammation and the symptoms of arthritis
  • improve recovery of muscles after exercise

Clearly, seeds are not just for the birds! They are delicious, nutritious, and an essential compliment to any plant-based diet!

GTA Vegan/Vegan-Friendly Spas

Although there are spas that I visit that aren't exactly vegan, or vegan-friendly, I have made a new commitment to supporting vegan businesses. My usual facial regimen involves dimond microdermabrasions at my hair salon/spa, where they use vegan products. However, I do want to venture out of the same-old to try something new....pamper myself...., get a facial, body wrap, scrub and pedicure. Why not, I just had a birthday, and I think some celebrations are in order! There appear to only be 2 locations in the Greater Toronto Area for me to check out:

Falling Off the Raw Food Wagon

Yes, it can happen....you've been raw for 3 months, 6 months, a year, etc...then, you have a cooked food meal,...and you can't get enough....then you find it hard to get back on the raw food wagon...what do you do?

If this is something you are dealing with, or have dealt with, some suggestions I recommend include:

1. Detox. Detoxify your body again (juice fast for a week, during the day and have a big raw dinner). Purge your cells of the toxic chemicals, excessive sugars and salts

2. go back to your regular raw regimen, but include some cooked foods in your day. A few tasty transition ideas are:

  • have a baked sweet potato alongside your raw salad

  • enjoy your favourite sprouted bread with nut butter of your choice (Ezekiel Bread is great)

  • enjoy a baked butternut squash for dinner - topped with some nutmeg and maple syrup

3. revisit your favourite raw food book or go-to website for recipes, get inspired and try something new. Perhaps you just need a creative boost to keep you going...

4. Reeducate yourself. Commit yourself to reading some literature about raw foodism, and why this diet leads to optimal health and wellbeing.

5. Attend a raw food seminar, cooking class, event or detox vacation to surround yourself with like minded people to help you continue on your raw food journey.

Falling off the wagon happens to the best of us, but recommitting yourself to a raw foodist lifestyle and persevering through this phase, is just one step in your raw food journey you had to experience.

Raw Retreats

I'm planning a vacation - a raw inspired vacation! Currently, I'm in the research phase of figuring things out: where I want to go (stay in Ontario, out-of-province, or beyond...), what I'd like to do, and whether I want it to have a detoxification/spiritual experience, etc. Also, I need to figure out whether I want to do this on my own, or bring somebody along with me to experience this trip with me.

From the research I've done so far, some possibilities include:

Tree of Life Rejuvenation Centre (Arizona)
Healthy Eating and Consciousness Program
Live Food Training Program
21 day transformation
Vegan Spirit Vacation

Pacha Mama (Costa Rica)
Body Cleanse Workshop (Earth Cycle)

Ashinah Centre for Awakening (British Columbia)
Luscious Living Raw Food Retreat

The Happy Oasis (Arizona)

Be You Retreat (Colorado)

The one thing that I do know that I'd like to experience is good raw food (with perhaps a detoxification experience), and beautiful landscapes to explore. I wouldn't mind some healing rituatuals like massage therapy, daily yoga, etc. The next factor to consider is how long I'd like to go for, and budget...but, other than those details, I can't wait for a new experience!

Klean Kanteen Bottles

If you don't live in a vacuum, you've probably heard that plastics do leach harmful chemicals...so, I looked around for a better alternative to using a ridiculous number of plastic waterbottles - other than Nalgene. The 2 alternatives include Sigg waterbottles and Klean Kanteen waterbottles. Sigg waterbottles look amazing, but they are of aluminum construction (and if you do your reading on aluminum, you'll know why it's harmful as well, and they have a questionable inner plastic coating). That left me with Klean Kanteen...100% stainless steel...although they aren't as "pretty" to look at, they are the better alternative!

Since purchasing my very first one from the US (and paying almost as much as I did for the bottle in shipping and duties), I've seen more and more stores carry Klean Kanteen bottles, AND in different colours! I now officially own a collection of these bottles, one for the gym, one for the house (both 40 oz bottles), and one smaller bottle (just because I wanted a colourful one!).

This is a bisphenol A (BPA) free, durable bottle, made out of stainless steel that is made by a company that is actively working towards lowering their ecological footprint by using earth-conscious practices at their facilities. In addition, in 2008, Klean Kanteen became a member of 1% for the Planet, committing to donation of at least 1% of our annual sales to non-profits working to protect and promote the wellness of this one great Earth. VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!

my detox experience

The detox process can be brutal for those transitioning into a raw diet....from my experience, it seems as if the more drammatic the change over onto raw was, the worse the detox symptoms. And it took several attempts to get me up to the 90% mark....
I was about 60-70% raw for quite a while...then decided to take the plunge and take out all unnecessary dehydrated foods and nuts and make my evening cooked meal raw. Going low fat and from 60% raw to high 90% range was a real blow on my body. The lethargy I felt, the hunger, cravings, and other detox symptoms like light headedness, some dizziness, and a horrific pimple breakout on my face were the symptoms I experienced....at least what I remember, lol!

However, the list of detox symptoms can include: headaches, acne, pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and constipation.

What is often recommended to relieve these symptoms is to ease your transition to raw and include a little cooked food or more liquids.

So, to make your transition to raw less painful (detoxifation-wise), by putting severe stress on your body, don't go raw too fast. I recommend reading a lot about going raw before taking the plunge, this way you can make an educated decision about how to go about introducing this diet into your lifestyle. Different sources have different opinions about how to go about going raw....so its all about getting many opinions and drawing your own conclusions.

Once fully transitioned, you will then experience raw food bliss: beautiful skin, a healthy glow, efficiently functioning clean cells, and an efficiently working digestive system....and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

RAW fed pets

This is quite a contravercial topic in the vegan world - how to feed your pets. My position is that my lifestyle choices have nothing to do with the nutritional requirements of my animals, and I think it would be selfish of me to comprimise their nutritional needs just to satisfy my own beliefs. Why have carnivorous pets if I didn't plan on feeding them meat?...

In addition, I think this situation runs far deeper for me than that. The idea behind eating raw (for both humans and animals) is that you are eating "live" food loaded with active enzymes, vitamins and minerals. I eat this way to optimize my nutrition, and maximize my nutrient uptake at each meal....I do the same for my dogs...

I feed my dogs a RAW diet. Their diets consist of organic muscle meat, some organ meat, some raw fruits and veggies, an oil (flax oil, for example), and raw bones recreationally (several times a week). My meat sources are rotated several times a week, because each meat offers a different nutritional profile, and add mackarel or sardines a few times a week for extra bone and oil. There is a science to this type of feeding: certain ratios (meat: bone: phosphorus: fat), the amount of fruit and vegetables to feed, the amount of raw meat required (determined by the dog's weight and activity levels).

In my opinion, any dog owner open to feeding their dogs raw need to get educated before making the switch. First its important to appreciate the benefits of raw before commiting to embracing this dietary lifestyle for their dog/cat....it is the way nature intended them to eat....kind of sounds like the same reasoning we use to explain why we practice a raw vegan lifestyle! : )

New RAW Hemp Protein Powder Supplement

I stopped in to Whole Foods last week and there was a sample stand with a new live food product - Ruth's Hemp Protein Powder.

The product they were featuring was the E3 Live & Maca Hemp protein powder. Given that I'm always up for trying something raw, after reading over the pamphlet and checking out the container label, I bought it!

The ingredients are simple, but offer vital nutrients any raw foodist could benefit from by putting a couple of scoops of this powder into their daily smoothie: Certified organic hemp powder, organic maca powder, organic E3 live (aphanizomenon flos-aquae). Per 2 scoops of powder, you get 14 grams of protein, a daily dose of vitamin D (200% of daily value), and other vitamins and minerals...plus the added benefits of maca powder ; ).
I'm planning on replacing my morning post-workout green smoothie with one of these shakes (made with almond milk, berries, and a banana)....stay tuned for a product review!

Zucchini Pasta...DELISH!

I've become quite skilled at julienning zucchini (with my cheap fancy grocery-store bought tool...but, a spiralizer is in my imminent future!), and have finally decided to explore some new raw pasta recipes! YUM!

I found a great raw pasta sauce recipe from my raw food bible " The Complete Book of RAW FOOD- Healthy, Delicious Vegetarian Cuisine made with Living Foods"(edited by Julie Rodwell). It's a great recipe! Try it and enjoy!

Pasta:
Julienned Zucchini

Tomato Sauce:
6 sun-dried tomatoes, soaked 2 hours
2 cups choped fresh tomoatoes
10 basil leaves
4 Medjool dates, soaked 2+ hours
pinch of paprika
1 red pepper

----> Blend all ingredients with a hand-held blender

To liven up this pasta dish, I thinly sliced carrots, zucchini and brocolli florets to add to my pasta. Overall, I was quite impressed with this recipe! My next attempt will hopefully involve zuchinni sliced by a spiralizer, and a yummy pesto sauce; perhaps with some nut loaf on the side!

My raw style...a day in the life

I stick to a low-fat raw vegan style of living...I describe my eating like a fusion of 80/10/10 and Natalia Rose's (phase 1) style of living.

A typical day for me will begin with a green smoothie after an empty-stomach morning workout.
Here's my recipe green smoothie recipe (a Natalia Rose recipe):

6-8 kale stems

1 head of celery

2 apples

1 medium beet

1 lemon

1-2 inches of ginger

After my morning smoothie, I stick to all-fruit meals throughout the day until dinner.

Dinner is usually a huge salad, followed by a raw desert. Right now, I'm completely obsessed with my own variation of a 3 pepper salad I found in Natalia Rose's Life Force Energy book:

3 peppers (3 different coloured peppers)

2 ears of raw corn

2-3 roma tomatoes

2 green onions

1 tbsp olive oil

juice of half a lemon

1/2 tsp of celtic sea salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp of hemp seeds or pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top

If I'm hungry before or after dinner, I'll make myself another green smoothie.

My approach is very simple, and doesn't entail a lot of elaborate food prep (dehydration, soaking, etc.). Howevever, to keep my tastebuds happy and the creative juices flowing, I do try my best to test drive at least one new recipe a week.

So, that's pretty much it, a day in the life....

LARABARs are better than your average candy bar...WAY better!

I was sitting at a TimHorton's in Vaughn yesterday (enjoying a bottle of water, and a green tea that I just didn't have the heart to try...it's awful) while on a date, and I decided to pull out some LARABARS for us to snack on....my inspiration for this post!

Larabars are absolutely delicious, contain only a handful of raw ingredients, come in a variety of flavours AND they happen to be the perfect compact dessert/snack/postwork-out meal! ....why I didn't come up with this concept, bewilders me...

For anybody who hasn't tried one, some interesting facts about Larabars include that they are vegan, raw, unprocessed, sweetened naturally (with no added sugars), and each bar contains 6 of fewer ingredients!

I've tried many raw bars, but Larabars happen to be my favourite. I have yet to find another 'raw' bar that I enjoy as much as these guys. The other bars I've tried either have flax seeds in them (I'd rather add sprouted ones to a salad, than eat them in a bar), are chocolate flavoured, or just really aren't that enjoyable.

Although I do embrace a predominantly low-fat raw vegan diet, and try to steer away from too many dehydrated foods and nuts, I do endulge from time-to-time on these bars....especially as a dessert or if I'm on the run and have to eat...but when I do eat these bars, it's good times....really good!

Raw food dining in the city

I'm in love with Live Food Bar in Toronto (Spadina & Dupont)!
I finally treated myself and what can I say....I'm speechless! The food blew me away! The food is not only a pleasure to look at, but it's delicious!!!
I brought a meat-eating date along with me to experience Live, and he loved it! The experience was incredible, and I can't wait to go back!

The place has both raw and cooked (vegan) options....everything is organic!

My experience began with a "Perk me Up" smoothie and the Pecan “Tempura” Rolls. The smoothie was very yummy and the sushi was to die for! The tops of the sushi were sprinkled with dehydrated sweet potato shavings.....it was crunchy, cream, raw and dreamy!

My main course was the Raw Combo platter. This dish had a small sample of each of the mains, along with a side salad. The platter included the teriyaki dish, raw lasagna, their raw pizza and this delicious pasta with raw meatballs! YUM! I was like a kid in a candy store! Every bite was like heaven! Dare I mention that I also brought 3 raw desserts home...for my family to try of course ; ) .

If I had to rate Live Food Bar, I'd give it a perfect 10!!! I had an incredible experience and wowed my date that eating raw can be this delicious and exciting! Next visit will be on my birthday (next month), and I plan on trying something new and bringing more non-raw friends and family members with me to eat at this gem of a restaurant...and I know they'll love it!

Supplements?

To supplement or not to supplement...that is the question!

I recently had some blood work done, and it turns out that I have very low iron levels (anemia). These results really got me thinking about supplements...should I supplement? Are there vegetarian gelatin-free iron supplements? Do iron supplements come in liquid form? But, the biggest question that was looming in my head was why aren't kale-loaded green juices doing anything for my iron levels? I drink very large amounts of green juice throughout the day (about 60 oz/day)...and clearly all that kale consumption wasn't doing anything for my pitiful iron levels (I'm not going to stop drinking my green juice...I thrive on it).

So, before I take the plunge and search for the vegan-friendly iron supplement, I have decided to be more conscious about consuming more cherries, raisins, spinach and swiss chard.

I'm going to do this for a couple of weeks, and will check to see where my iron levels go....my last ditch attempt to avoid supplementation.

My reasons for going RAW

I've been asked many times why I choose to be a raw vegan, how I got into this type of lifestyle, and what exactly I can eat.

In a few words, I was eating ethically on a vegan diet - not healthfully. I was eating more grains than my body knew what to do with, ate too many nutrionless soy-based products, and was gaining weight....and significant amounts of it! I just knew there was a better way to eat than this, while still staying true to my animal-product free diet....so I started to research and read a lot. This is when I came across the 80/10/10 diet, and started to include more all fruit or veggie meals into my day....the rest is history!
I found this the other day. 40 reasons to get healthier and eat raw:

40 REASONS TO EAT RAW:

1. Imagine jumping out of bed in the morning feeling totally awake, vibrantly alive & healthier than you have ever felt before.

2. Many people have found relief from ailments and diseases simply by following the raw food diet.

3. Excess weight seems to just melt off your body when you eat a raw and living food diet.
4. By eating a raw and living food diet you can begin to turn back the hands of time.

5. When you eat a raw and living food diet you are feeding your body and your cells with live foods filled with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other life giving substances that cooking destroys.

6. Enzymes are destroyed when food is heated above 112 degrees.

7.We need enzymes for every function in our body. To walk, to talk, to breathe, and to move, life itself depends on them. Cooking food kills enzymes.
8. You can eat a whole banana cream pie for lunch.
9. The choices for desserts are so numerous and delicious, and when made from raw and living food, there is no guilt and no need to abstain.

10.The first thing that is lost when you cook something is the water content. Our bodies are between 60% to 75% water. Vegetables and fruits are loaded with water.

11. Cooking destroys 50% of the protein in our food. Between 50 and 80 percent of the vitamins and minerals are also destroyed.

12. Oxygen is lost and free radicals are produced when foods are cooked.
13. There is a huge difference between cooked fats and raw fats.
14. The studies that have been done linking fats to obesity, high cancer rates, heart attacks, kidney failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, angina, cardiovascular disease, and all of the other diseases that clog up the blood and the arteries have been done with cooked fats, not raw fats.
15. Raw fats, such as avocadoes, olives, coconuts, nuts and seeds are imperative in a healthy diet. These fats contain antioxidants. They contain oils that help the joints, nerves, and bones.

16. Raw plant fats do not cause the body to gain excess weight because they still contain the enzyme lipase; this is the enzyme that is needed to digest fat.

17. Cooking fats destroy lipase (the enzyme that is needed to digest fat), along with other important enzymes and minerals.

18. If planted, all living foods would sprout and grow.

19. It is very common for people who eat raw and living food to feel a type of "buzz" - a natural, very pleasant high.

20. Raw and living foods are not processed, heated, cooked or altered in any way. They are nothing more than whole foods in their natural state.

21. No diet- including vegetarian or vegan diets - even comes close to producing the healthy, all-over beauty, raw and living food accomplishes.

22. "Live foods produce live bodies; dead foods produce dead bodies."

23. A major reason why a raw and living food diet helps reverse or slow down the aging process is the high levels of certain vitamins, trace minerals and anti-oxidants found in this type of food.

24. Switching to a raw and living food diet has helped so many people feel well and healthy for the first time in their lives.

25. You will experience a markedly improved state of mind and clarity when eating raw and living foods.

26. Within days of beginning this diet, people notice mood improvements. The mental "haze" lifts.

27. Eating a raw and living food diet makes you feel more energized, but also more at peace; more able to focus and concentrate.

28. Your body will reshape and repair itself.

29. Weight loss and healings are "secondary" benefits to this diet.

30. This diet will affect you positively on every level: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

31. An abused body, once shown some kindness, will work like crazy to become healthy and whole again.

32. As we age, our body's natural source of enzymes becomes depleted and we need to replenish this source through the foods we eat.

33. Cooking makes it harder for our bodies to break up and digest the foods that we eat.
34. Cooked food gets stored in our bodies as toxins, which can lead to all kinds of diseases and illness.

35. The enzymes that are destroyed in cooking food is detrimental in so many ways. Not only does it affect our immune system but also our brain function, and our energy levels.

36. A significant aspect of the aging process is running out of enzymes. Cells stop dividing; our immune system begins to fail. Our enzyme reserve is depleted over a lifetime of eating cooked food.

37. Enzymes are what keep us alive, healthy, young and beautiful and they're never so abundant as they are in raw and living food.

38. We need the antioxidants that are rich in raw and living food to keep our skin, hair, nails, and eyes glowing and healthy.
39. Eating a raw and living food diet helps to ensure a proper acid-alkaline balance in your body. An overly acidic body can lead to acute or chronic diseases. Cooking makes food more acidic. Raw foods are alkaline foods.

40. Just because you are doing something different than the mainstream, doesn't mean you are wrong!

The best reason of all... because it tastes great!
